10 Free Ways to Speed Up Your Laptop (No Upgrades Needed)

October 9, 2026 · Marion Remote Fix

Before you spend money on RAM or an SSD, try these free fixes. Most slow laptops are being dragged down by software, not hardware.

1. Clean Up Startup Programs

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) > Startup tab. Disable everything except your antivirus. Spotify, Discord, OneDrive, and Adobe updaters don’t need to start with Windows.

2. Turn Off Visual Effects

Search “Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows” > select “Adjust for best performance.” This disables animations and transparency that waste resources on older laptops.

3. Clear Temp Files

Settings > System > Storage > Temporary files. Delete everything. This can free 2–10 GB of space and remove corrupted cache files that slow things down.

4. Uninstall Bloatware

Every laptop ships with software you didn’t ask for. HP has 8–12 pre-installed programs. Dell has 6–10. Lenovo has its own suite. Uninstall anything from the manufacturer that you don’t actively use.

5. Check for Malware

Run a full scan with Windows Defender or Malwarebytes Free. Adware and crypto miners silently eat CPU and RAM in the background.

6. Update Drivers

Outdated graphics and chipset drivers cause stuttering and slowness. Go to your laptop manufacturer’s support page, enter your model number, and download the latest drivers.

7. Defragment (HDD Only)

If you have a traditional hard drive (not SSD), search “Defragment and Optimize Drives.” Run optimization on your C: drive. Do NOT do this if you have an SSD — it reduces SSD lifespan.

8. Adjust Power Settings

Settings > System > Power > set to “Best performance” when plugged in. “Balanced” mode throttles your CPU to save battery even when you’re on AC power.

9. Reduce Browser Tabs

Every open tab uses RAM. 30 Chrome tabs can use 3+ GB. Use bookmarks or a tab manager extension instead of keeping everything open.

10. Restart Regularly

If you never shut down your laptop (just close the lid), memory leaks accumulate. A weekly restart clears everything and lets Windows apply pending updates.

Still Slow After All That?

If software tweaks don’t help, it’s probably hardware. We can diagnose remotely and tell you exactly what upgrade would make the biggest difference.
