Windows Update Stuck? Here's How to Fix It

October 9, 2026 · Marion Remote Fix

Windows Update gets stuck more often than Microsoft would like to admit. It sits at “Downloading 45%” for three hours, or reboots into “Working on updates” and stays there. Here’s how to fix it without losing your files.

Wait Longer Than You Think

Seriously. Some updates take 30–60 minutes to install, especially cumulative updates and feature updates. If the percentage hasn’t changed in 2+ hours, then it’s actually stuck.

Restart the Update Service

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  2. Run: net stop wuauserv
  3. Run: net stop bits
  4. Delete the download cache: del /f /s /q C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\*
  5. Restart the services: net start wuauserv then net start bits
  6. Try Windows Update again

Run the Troubleshooter

Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update. It’s not magic, but it fixes about 40% of common update issues automatically.

Check Disk Space

Windows needs at least 20 GB of free space for major updates. If your C: drive is nearly full, the update will fail silently. Clear temp files, empty the recycle bin, or move files to an external drive.

The Nuclear Option

If nothing works, download the Windows Update Assistant directly from Microsoft’s website. It bypasses the normal update mechanism entirely and forces the latest version to install. This works when all other methods fail.

Warning: If your computer is stuck on “Working on updates — don’t turn off your computer,” do NOT force it off unless it’s been more than 3 hours. Interrupting an update can corrupt Windows.
